I captured this image at the 2016 Little Bighorn Battle Re-enactment, at the actual site where the battle took place, June 1876. This is Sitting Bull being served a written peace treaty. Tension between the native inhabitants of the Great Plains and the encroaching white European settlers in the latter half of the 19th Century resulted in a series of conflicts, known as the Indian Wars. The Indian Peace Commission of 1867-1868 had signed treaties with the Plains Indians to establish peace. Yet, despite these accomplishments, Congress failed to quickly fulfill the treaty stipulations, and instead of initiating an era of peace, the commission commenced a decade of war and bloodshed throughout the Plains
